2025 Florida Legislative Session

Laws Approved by Governor with July 1, 2025 Effective Date

Fraser Cobbe and Joe Daraskevich continue the series with a look at some of the bills that have now been signed by Gov. Ron DeSantis and what sort of changes can be expected in the medical community starting July 1. The first topic they dive into is a new law that covers student athletes in Florida high schools. The new mandate requires ECGs for student athletes starting in the 2026 school year. They switch topics to discuss new limits to non-FDA approved use of stem cells. The three types of medicine covered in this expansion are orthopedics, wound care and pain management. Fraser and Joe bring the conversation back to schools with a look at expanding disease-specific research opportunities and some new tools. Things will happen quickly as legislators prepare for the 2026 Legislative Session, so feel free to reach out to Fraser or Joe if you're looking to get more involved.

Fraser has a list of bills that should still be watched closely in the Special Session, including some priorities in the rural areas of the state. As the 2025 Legislative Session in Tallahassee gets closer to the finish line, Fraser Cobbe and Joe Daraskevich discuss the remaining priorities for physicians in the state and what has to happen for those bills to become law. Fraser starts the episode by breaking down a shift in leadership in the Democratic Party, now that Jason Pizzo has switched to No Party Affiliation. That's just the latest headline in a Session that's featured plenty of drama within parties and across the aisle. The likelihood of a Special Session gets stronger and stronger each day as budget discussions continue. It appears legislators are struggling to agree on top line items, meaning there's a long way to go before all the spending is approved. Fraser also explains the latest in the wrongful death legislation and why Wednesday (4/30) will be a busy day in the House and the Senate. Drop a comment below if you have any thoughts on the final days of Session!

Fraser Cobbe and Joe Daraskevich talk a little golf to kick off 2025 Masters week. While the golf world is focused on Augusta, Ga., plenty of eyes are watching Tallahassee, where lawmakers on opposite sides of the aisle continue to butt heads. In this episode, Fraser explains why some bills may get all the way to the governor's desk before they fizzle out. Joe and Fraser also track the progress of a bill related to CRNA autonomous practice and why that piece of legislation has a long way to go despite passing in the House. The second half of the 2025 Legislative Session will see the number of bills dwindle as stakeholders focus on priorities that can potentially become law. The fourth week of the 2025 Legislative Session involved some hot topics in Tallahassee. The discussion wraps up with Joe's musical selection of the week, as he points out the correct spelling of an artist's name can be very important when going to see a concert. As always, viewers are encouraged to leave their comments below because there is a lot more to come in the remaining weeks of the Legislative Session and it's important to cover the topics that matter most to physicians.

March 24, 2025

Fraser Cobbe and Joe Daraskevich try to bring listeners a little good news since March 20 was the International Day of Happiness, but not everything went the way physicians hoped in the third week of the 2025 Legislative Session. There's some good news regarding a bill filed by Rep. Dean Black (R) from Jacksonville that touches on retroactive denials. The bill is alive after passing through a committee on the House side as the attention turns to the Senate.  Physicians won't be as happy to hear about movement on a bill that covers sovereign immunity and another one that focuses on wrongful death. Joe closes out the episode with a musical selection that is sure to make people happy again, so give that a listen and focus on the positive things happening in Tallahassee!
