New AMA data shows continued progress in physician well-being. In 2025, 41.9% of physicians reported at least one symptom of burnout, down from 43.2% in 2024 and 48.2% in 2023. Burnout rates varied widely by specialty: emergency medicine, urological surgery and hematology/oncology reported the highest levels, while infectious diseases, ophthalmology and pathology reported some of the lowest. The findings highlight meaningful national progress but also persistent variation across the profession. Supporting physician well-being remains essential to sustaining a strong health care workforce and ensuring high-quality patient care.
